Ferrari has finally revealed the complete design of its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design house founded by Jony Ive in 2019. The car marks a significant departure from Ferrari’s traditional sports car aesthetic, featuring a four-door, five-seat layout that resembles an SUV more than a conventional supercar. The exterior, credited to the design house, has drawn mixed reactions, with some calling it bold and others questioning its departure from the brand’s iconic identity.

The car’s design draws on elements from Marc Newson’s earlier work, including the 1999 Ford 021C concept. Both vehicles share a distinctive door-opening mechanism, though their overall shapes differ. The car’s suicide doors, which hinge at the rear, offer a dramatic entry and exit for passengers, with a button that can automatically close them. Inside, the cabin blends high-tech controls with materials like leather, creating a balance between modernity and warmth that some previously found too clinical.

The company’s commitment to performance remains intact, with the car packing 1,035 horsepower from four individual electric motors—one per wheel. This setup allows for precise torque distribution, enhancing cornering agility and stability on various surfaces. The car also features four-wheel steering and an advanced active suspension system that adjusts ride height and stiffness dynamically, lowering by 10mm at highway speeds.

Power is managed through the company’s new Vehicle Control Unit, which samples road conditions and motor output every 5 milliseconds. This system optimizes traction and stability, a critical feature for a vehicle with such extreme power. The car’s 122-kWh battery pack, positioned in a skateboard-style layout, supports a claimed 329 miles on the European WLTP cycle, though real-world range may fall short on the stricter EPA test.

Silence is a hallmark of electric vehicles, but they have addressed the absence of engine noise with a unique sound system. An acoustic pickup on the rear axle captures motor vibrations, which are amplified to produce a distinctive, recognizable tone. They liken this to an electric guitar amplifier, emphasizing the brand’s evolution from traditional powertrains to fully electric propulsion.

Pricing details remain unclear for the U.S. market, but in Italy, the car will start at €550,000, making it the company’s most expensive model to date. This premium reflects the design house’s history of creating high-value designs, though the car’s success will ultimately depend on its driving experience, which they have yet to fully demonstrate. The car aims to expand the company’s audience beyond traditional enthusiasts, as highlighted by the brand’s chief marketing officer, Enrico Galliera.
