Spotify Voice Feature Lets You Create Playlists

Spotify is rolling out a new beta feature called “Talk to Spotify,” which lets paid users create playlists and learn about songs using voice commands. The feature is currently available in the US, Ireland, and Sweden to Premium subscribers 18 and older on iOS and Android devices. Users can access the tool by pressing the microphone button in the search field or by typing text commands directly into the app.

Managing Playlists And The Queue

The new voice interface lets users control their listening experience without opening menus or searching through lists. From the Home or Now Playing views, you can ask the app to play music you have not heard before. You can then refine the selection by adding specific artists like Bad Bunny or requesting a change in energy level, such as making a playlist “more upbeat.” When you hear a song you enjoy, the system understands commands to save the track, add it to the queue, or follow the artist.

Users can also interact with the feature to manage their library. If a song comes on that you want to keep, you simply tell the app to “save this song” or “add this to my queue.” This removes the friction of manually finding the track in your list to tap the save icon.

Learning About Music And History

Talk to Spotify goes beyond simple playback controls by answering questions about the content playing on the screen. In the Now Playing view, you can ask for details about an artist or album. For example, you might ask when an album was released or what genre it falls into. The feature provides answers and suggests related artists or stories to explore.

The tool also works with podcasts and audiobooks, allowing listeners to learn more about guests or authors. You can ask about your own listening habits, such as when you first listened to a specific song or what genres you have been into recently. This adds a layer of discovery to the listening experience, turning the app into an interactive guide for your media consumption.

Spotify has been integrating artificial intelligence into its platform for several years, using the technology for personalized podcast generation and content remixing. This latest update applies those capabilities to the user interface, aiming to make navigation more conversational. While the feature handles basic requests well, many users are still waiting for tools that help filter out low-quality content, often referred to as “slop,” in algorithmic suggestions.
