Apple Watch adds readiness score for workouts

Apple unveiled a new health-focused feature at its 2026 “Surprise and Shine” event, adding a readiness metric to the Apple Watch lineup.

How the new metric works

The rating uses a 0-10 scale and updates throughout the day. It draws on recent activity, vital signs and a sleep score to gauge how prepared a user is for exertion.

Physicians and scientists from the Apple Heart and Movement Study helped design the algorithm. If a strenuous workout occurs, the rating reflects that, while sleep quality and other vitals also influence the result.

Comparison with competing devices

Whoop bands have delivered a Recovery score since 2015, and Oura Rings provide a similar readiness rating. Most modern Fitbit devices also feature comparable metrics.

Fitbit Premium subscribers gained access to a comparable readiness feature as early as 2021, though the capability has since become part of the broader device ecosystem rather than a premium-only perk. While Fitbit introduced the metric, the Whoop brand is credited with popularizing the daily recovery concept across the fitness-tech market.

Owners of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 can view the new rating on their wrists. Suggested actions include “Recover,” “Pace Yourself,” “Read,” and “Go For It,” indicating the level of activity recommended for the day.

The updated health app, arriving later in 2026, adds Insights and Longevity tabs. It also introduces a Health Sensing System that improves heart-rate and heart-rate-variability tracking.

Analysts note that iOS 27 may reduce the necessity of a smartwatch for basic fitness tracking, as the operating system adds more on-device health capabilities.
