Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, a deal valued at $12.9 billion that is set to finalize in the first half of 2027. The agreement was announced on September 2, 2026 and brings one of the most prominent figureheads in open AI development under the company’s purview. While many associate Nvidia with selling processors, the company has recently made significant contributions to the AI sector that go beyond hardware.
The Hugging Face Platform
Hugging Face serves as a community for over 18 million developers and power users to collaborate and share resources. The platform hosts a massive repository known as the Hugging Face Hub, where creators can find and share machine learning models, apps, and datasets. It functions similarly to GitHub but with a specific focus on AI and data science development.
This focus extends beyond individual users. According to Nvidia, more than 200,000 companies currently use the platform to discover, evaluate, and deploy AI. The acquisition represents a two-pronged strategy for the chipmaker: it gains access to a major AI player embedded in corporate technology while securing a direct line to a passionate community of creators.
Software Ecosystem Integration
Over the years, Nvidia has engineered a complete software environment to complement its hardware. This includes CUDA, a toolset that is frequently cited as a major perk by GPU owners, alongside a growing slate of libraries and AI models. Acquiring Hugging Face gives Nvidia ownership of the platform millions of developers use to discover, customize, and deploy those models.

The emphasis on open models is particularly significant. Unlike proprietary services that keep architecture and weights behind closed doors, open-source and open-weight models give developers considerable freedom to access, modify, and distribute AI on their own infrastructure. Hugging Face has rapidly become a central distribution point for these resources. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been a vocal supporter of open models, and the company has already contributed hundreds of models and datasets to the platform, including GR00T training data, which rose to the top ten most-downloaded datasets.
Ecosystem Defense and Expansion
Acquiring a platform used by millions of AI developers also provides a defensive aspect for Nvidia. Major customers, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, are developing their own AI processors, such as Microsoft’s Maia 200, Google’s Tensor Processing Units, and Amazon’s Trainium 3. This trend could reduce reliance on Nvidia’s products over time. Owning a platform used by millions of developers gives Nvidia another avenue for maintaining its influence over the broader AI ecosystem.
Future for the Open-Source Community
For now, developers should not expect Hugging Face to become an Nvidia-only ecosystem. Huang has explicitly stated that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. He noted that developers will choose the models, frameworks, clouds, inference services, and computing platforms they want. Consequently, users will not have to jump through Nvidia-shaped hoops to build on or deploy to the community.
